Angela Hurink – Integration Coordinator ESN Board 2017/2018
Hi guys! I am Angela Hurink, 23 years old and I am the Integration Coordinator of the ESN Groningen board this year. I am still studying, Media & Entertainment Management at Stenden in Leeuwarden, but I took a year off to become part of the ESN Groningen board. As part of my studies I went to Thailand and Indonesia, where I spent one semester studying Marketing & Management in Asia. I grew up in the beautiful town of Ommen and went to high school in Zwolle. After finishing high school I decided to take a gap year, in order to save up some money and to spend that money in Australia and Southeast Asia for about 4.5 months. After that year I moved to Groningen and I have been living here for over 4 years now. In my free time I really enjoy listening to music (whether it is just at home but of course preferably at a concert or festival), travelling, participating in pub quizzes and of course hanging out with friends.
Why the ESN Board?
I have always loved travelling and meeting people from different countries, so that’s why I got interested in ESN. In the past two years I have been part of 3 ESN committees (Party & Pub quiz, PR & Graphics and the Integration Night committee). This year I should have actually been doing my internship, but instead I decided I wanted to extend my time as a student in Groningen and spend one more year with ESN before completing my studies and stepping foot into the real world (aka adulthood). I really like the international environment in Groningen and I want others to enjoy their time in Groningen as much as I have done in the past years and that’s also why I wanted to become part of the ESN Groningen board.
The function of Integration Coordinator is probably the one that is the vaguest. However this also means that there is room for new ideas and projects. The tasks of the Integration Coordinator are quite diverse; setting up meetings with external parties, supervising internal and external committees, organizing various activities, representing ESN in several platforms and promoting and executing your own projects. As Integration Coordinator you are also involved in an event called Beyond the Student Bubble: Experience Groningen which is organised in cooperation with the municipality of Groningen. Furthermore you are responsible for the Culture day in both the introduction weeks. The ESN committees under your responsibility are the Buddy & Integration Committee and the International Dinner Committee. Furthermore, another important aspect of the position is ESN’s integration projects, such as the Intercambio Language Exchange Project and the Buddy Program, or coming up with new integration projects like the International Soccer Tournament with a Dutch association.
